The Senior Test Engineer will be responsible for leading the planning, execution and analysis of Opentrons product testing. This role requires vast technical testing expertise in mechanical, electrical and software engineering. The Senior Test Engineer will report to the Test Engineering Manager. Drive test requirements, execution, and communication from concept to production for large scale projects, i.e. robot development or multiple modules.
Own project scheduling and definition of major milestones for self and junior/staff team members.
Proactively communicate project findings and statuses to internal and external departments.
Prioritize own projects and junior/staff team member efforts as-needed based on evolving department or company needs.
Mentor junior and staff team members through career planning, process improvements, and technical growth.
Define and establish testing processes for test planning, data collection, data analysis, and communication to external teams.
Proactively collaborate with product, mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing departments to deeply understand product specifications and diagnose customer issues and assembly/qc problems.
Determine lean test equipment, software programs, or similar needs for the department.
Identify and design complex electromechanical test fixtures and write scripts for R&D, product development, and mass manufacturing.
Write, execute, and document detailed test plans, tests, and test reports.
Review test plans, reports and execution methods of test engineering team members.
This role may include frequent trips to China to work alongside team members overseas.
Minimum of 8 years experience in a test, mechanical, or electrical engineering position.
Proven mechanical, electrical and software skills, having directly led and developed hundreds of complex electromechanical tests including both hardware and software.
Proven experience developing lean and effective test reports and documentation structure.
Strong management and/or project management experience. Able to handle a large variety of projects simultaneously while maintaining highest priority items on track.
Strong experience with product development life cycles, having brought hundreds of features and products from concept to market.
Strong experience working directly with manufacturers or contract manufacturers.
Strong experience and intuition with linear motion, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, electrical motors and similar relevant domains, having worked on a vast number of relevant projects.
Strong proficiency with CAD & mechanical test equipment. Able to quickly and effectively produce complex fixtures.
Strong proficiency with PCBA development & debugging tools.
Strong proficiency with python and python hardware driver development for measurement equipment.
Strong proficiency with ERP & lean document management systems.
Experience in life sciences or medical devices
Experience in XYZ linear motion systems
Experience with 3D printers or similar
