The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for leading the mechanical design, development, and mass manufacturing of Opentrons robots. This role includes mechanical development, project management, and mentorship of junior team members. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will report to the Mechanical Engineering Manager. Lead the mechanical development of future Opentrons products and make improvements to existing products. This includes designing, prototyping, testing, mass manufacturing, and sustaining.
Drive products through new product introduction phases, including coordination with departments for sourcing, quality process creation, test fixture design, assembly method creation, and similar.
Ownership of project scheduling, definition of major milestones, and organizing discussion around key decision points.
Communicate project status and goals proactively across the product development and operations teams.
Prioritize efforts for yourself and junior/staff team members as department and company needs evolve.
Manage bill of materials and cost information to a high degree of accuracy to drive product towards the target cost.
Mentor junior and staff team members through career planning, product development, and mass manufacturing.
Establish and improve design, testing, manufacturing and qc processes for continuous document control, operational yield, and quality improvements.
Constant collaboration with electrical, software, design, testing, and manufacturing.
This role may include frequent trips to China to work alongside team members overseas.
Minimum of 8 years experience in a mechanical engineering role
Proven product development skills, having led and developed a number of relevant, complex, electromechanical products from concept to market.
Strong experience with injection molding, die casting, sheet metal forming, extrusions, CNC, and similar manufacturing processes.
Strong experience with product development cycles and demonstrated history of bringing hundreds of features or products from concept to market.
Strong experience and intuition with linear motion, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, electric motors, and similar relevant domains.
Strong experience working directly with manufacturers or contract manufacturers.
Strong management and/or project management experience. Able to handle a large variety of projects simultaneously while maintaining highest priority items on track.
Strong experience with DFMA, ECN processes, test reports, manufacturing/quality reports, and similar.
Strong proficiency with CAD and drafting (Solidworks preferred). Able to create lean models, assemblies, and drawings.
Strong proficiency with ERP & lean document management systems.
Familiarity with python, PCBA development, & debugging tools.
Experience in life sciences or medical devices
Design experience with CNC machines, 3D printers, pick-and-place machines or similar motion-dependent devices.
Experience with air movement (fans, blowers).
Experience with calculating or modeling stress-strain, fluid flow, or thermal systems.
