Toshi Akashige

Laboratory & Safety Manager

Toshihiro Akashige is a laboratory manager for the HAX Program in Newark operated by U.S. venture fund SOSV. He oversees the daily operations of the chemical laboratory to ensure proper equipment maintenance, efficient allocation of laboratory resources, enforcement of safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment, and compliance with safety regulations.

Prior to joining HAX, Toshi worked for the department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) at NYU Tandon School of Engineering as a laboratory manager. He worked closely with the graduate research groups and principal investigators, and provided technical support to enable state-of-the-art research and laboratory operations for CBE. He was also a former student who earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering in the very same lab he worked as the lab manager. His thesis work demonstrated gas separations utilizing electrochemically modulated membrane-electrode assembly. This work earned him fellowship in the NSF GRFP. He is also a coauthor of a heat transfer textbook, Kern’s Process Heat Transfer 2nd Edition.

Toshi enjoys prototyping and building reactors and laboratory gadgets. During his graduate research, he frequently designed and built custom reactors and tools for multiple different decarbonization research projects including electrochemical reactor cells, spray deposition systems, and in-situ sample measuring modules for a number of different spectrometric equipment such as for FTIR, UV-Vis, optical ellipsometry, and synchrotron WAXS. He also enjoys playing city building games, watching anime, and 3D printing toys for his pet cat in his downtime.
